Atlas
Atlas is one of only two boys at Willow River Equine Rescue. He is 2 years old and the smallest Thoroughbred we’ve seen. He will grey out like his mother, Athena. He still has a lot of growing to do, but in the meantime, he is greeting everyone with hugs and kisses. Once he is gelded, he will be ready to start taking applications.
Athena
Athena is our biggest mare standing at 17hh. She is an 11 years old Thoroughbred and has had 5 foals. She was rescued from being a broodmare her entire life. Her last foal was two years ago, Atlas. She is ready to learn how to be a horse and given a job. Smart and willing, Athena will make a wonderful companion for an intermediate rider. Her maximum weight limit is at 200lbs until she muscles back up, at which time she could handle a 250lbs rider.
Colton
At 2 years old, he is the second boy at the rescue. He was rescued from auction with Savannah, his mother. He is Arab/Paso Fino and his chestnut fur is unrelieved. Still a little skittish, this 13.3hh handsome gelding will make an outstanding endurance prospect.
Nala
From the Yakima Reservation Mustang herd, Nala is almost a yearling that was rescued from auction. She is a chestnut filly and is as sweet as can be. She has only been at the Rescue a couple days, but she is quickly becoming a favorite. Once we learn more about her, we will share.
Yelena
This spicy Yakima Reservation Mustang earned her name Yelena (Black Widow Fans). She is over 14.2hh, and has long legs with room for grow. She is a liver Chestnut with a very small snip. Already she is surprising us with her intelligence. Once she is gentled, she will start our training program. We can’t wait to see how she turns out.
Recently Adopted WRER Horses
Our recently adopted horses have found their forever home!
Lakota
Lakota is almost 4 years old. She was saved from euthanasia when she was around 6-12 months old. She is a Yakima Reservation Mustang and the sweetest, furriest, most cuddly mustang. She has been started under saddle following an injury that she has fully recovered. At 13.3hh, she can handle a 150lbs rider. She would make a great rodeo, barrel, cow cutting, or mountaineering prospect for a small adult or younger rider.
Alta
Alta is a mustang that was “free” on Craigslist. When she failed her lameness exam, her owners posted her to Craigslist. Our trainer saw this and new she would get snatched up by a kill buyer and saved her. Once at WRER, she was x-rayed and found a fracture in her fetlock. After a year of PRP (Plasma Rich Platelet) she has fully recovered. However, she will not be able to be a barrel or hard charging horse, but that doesn’t mean she can’t make a terrific riding buddy for intermediate rider. She is 14.2hh and gorgeous in grey, strawberry, and white fur.
Savannah
Savannah was a recent auction rescue. She is a 5–6-year-old, 13.3hh, chestnut mare. Her blaze is stunning and so is she. Paso Fino’s are renowned for their easy gait and endurance. She is small but mighty, being able to handle a rider and tack of 175lbs. She is about to start the training program; however, she is already learning from the other horses that people are nice and have treats. She loves peppermints.
